THREE-MINUTE THESIS COMPETITION

3 Minutes, 1 Slide…..Your Thesis!

You are invited to present a compelling spoken presentation on your research and its significance in just three minutes to a non-specialist audience.

 

Why?
The competition will help you

·       to develop your communication skills,

·       to promote your work, seek support and obtain funding,

·       to obtain valuable feedback from domain experts,

·       to develop simple ways of explaining complex ideas

·       to raise the profile of your work,

·       to enhance your CV, and

·       to network with like-minded researchers.

 

How?
There are two stages to the competition.

 

Stage 1:

Submit by September 1, 2021

1.     a 2-page summary (max 600 words) of the main contributions of your thesis,

2.     a short CV (maximum 200 words), and

The summary should be single-authored by the applicant who is an Undergraduates/ Graduates student in 2021. The submitted summaries will undergo a peer-review process and high-quality submissions will be shortlisted for onsite presentation.

 

Stage 2:

Present your thesis within three minutes using a single slide as an aide during IEEE ICSIPA 2021 in front of a committee consisting of experts from academia and industry.

The organizers reserve the right to collect audio-visual material on the day of presentation for media coverage. The winner will be selected based on both the summary and the oral presentation.

Rules
A single static PowerPoint slide is permitted.

No slide transitions, animations or ‘movement’ of any description are allowed. The slide is to be presented from the beginning of the oration.

No additional electronic media (e.g. sound and video files) are permitted.

No additional props (e.g. costumes, musical instruments, laboratory equipment) are permitted. Presentations are limited to 3 minutes maximum and competitors exceeding 3 minutes are disqualified. Presentations are to be spoken word (e.g. no poems, raps or songs).

Presentations are considered to have commenced when a presenter starts their  presentation  through  either movement or speech.

The decision of the adjudicating panel is final.

 

Timeline
Submission of Research Summary:    September 01, 2021

Notification of Shortlisting: September 06, 2021

Confirmation of participation by shortlisted applicants: September 10, 2021

Event: September 13, 2021

 

Awards

All participants will receive certificate of participation. The winners will receive a certificate of achievement and a mystery prize.

 

Judging criteria

Comprehension and content

·       Did the presentation provide an understanding of the background and significance to the research question being addressed, while explaining terminology and avoiding jargon?

·       Did the presentation clearly describe the impact and/or results of the research, including conclusions and outcomes?

·       Did the presentation follow a clear and logical sequence?

·       Was the thesis topic, research significance, results/impact and outcomes communicated in language appropriate to a non-specialist audience?

·       Did the presenter spend adequate time on each element of their presentation – or did they elaborate for too long on one aspect or was the presentation rushed?

 

Engagement and communication

·       Did the oration make the audience want to know more?

·       Was the presenter careful not to trivialise or generalise their research?

·       Did the presenter convey enthusiasm for their research?

·       Did the presenter capture and maintain their audience’s attention?

·       Did the speaker have sufficient stage presence, eye contact and vocal range; maintain a steady pace, and have a confident stance?

·       Did the PowerPoint slide enhance the presentation – was it clear, legible, and concise?
