Prof Shaikh A. Fattah
“Recent Development in AI-Driven Disease Detection Techniques for Smart Healthcare”
Abstract:
Signal processing techniques are widely used in almost every humanitarian technology based real-life applications targeted to meet the needs of a particular community. Among different HT
applications, in this talk, AI-driven (machine learning (ML) and deep learning (DL) based) automatic disease detection techniques will be presented. It is found that the use of signal processing techniques on a given 1D or 2D data, prior to ML based classification, is very helpful. We have demonstrated a very effective use of acoustic characteristics of heart sounds in the ML based automatic classification of heart-valve disorders. Moreover, some of our recently proposed attention-based deep neural network architectures will be presented where we propose temporal,
channel, spatial, and guided attention mechanisms for achieving better discriminative features. The results on disease detection performance will be demonstrated in dealing with cardiac (PCG, ECG) and different medical imaging data (e.g. CT, MRI, endoscopy, ultrasound).
Biography:
Dr. Shaikh Fattah, a Professor at BUET, Bangladesh, with a Ph.D. from Concordia University and postdoc at Princeton, is a leading expert with 250+ publications, 100+ invited talks, and numerous accolades, including the IEEE MGA Achievement Award. He is deeply involved in IEEE leadership, serving as Chair of multiple chapters and committees, and holds senior roles across IEEE Region-10 and Bangladesh chapters.
Prof Nor Ashidi Mat Isa
“Machine Learning Based Disease Diagnostic System: Implementation and Challenges”
Abstract:
This speech will highlight the potential of machine learning (ML) in medical image analysis and disease diagnostic. First, this speech will focus on the implementation of machine learning for disease diagnostic systems, which involves image processing and intelligent classification phases. Contrast enhancement and noise filtering are used to improve the quality of medical images, before features extraction and analysis are performed to extract significant features. Intelligent classifiers are then used for disease classification purposes. Three case studies namely, classification of cervical cancer (2 cases) and detection of sperm motility will be presented. At the end of the speech, challenges of ML based disease diagnostic system will be discussed as well. Examples of challenges are (i) gaining confidence among medical experts, (ii) competition from deep learning approaches, (iii) developing a more objective system etc.
Biography:
Prof. Ir. Dr. Nor Ashidi received the B. Eng. Degree in Electrical and Electronic Engineering with First Class Honors in 1999 and the PhD degree in Electronic Engineering (majoring in Image Processing and Artificial Neural Network) in 2003 from Universiti Sains Malaysia (USM). He is currently a Professor at the School of Electrical and Electronic Engineering, USM. His research interests include intelligent systems, image processing, machine learning, deep learning and medical image processing. As of August 2024, he has published more than 195, 236 and 317 articles indexed in WoS-ISI (H-index 36), SCOPUS (H-index 42) and Google Scholar (H-Index 50) respectively. Due to his outstanding achievement in research, he gained recognition, both national and internationally. He was recognized as top 2% researcher in category – Citation Impact in Single Calendar Years 2019, 2020 and 2021 by Stanford University USA and Top Research Scientist Malaysia (TRSM) by Akademi Sains Malaysia (ASM) in 2020.

“Computer Vision & AI Applications for Research & Education: An Introduction of an Open Platform and the RoboCup Community”
Abstract:
Computer vision is a fascinating area for the AI research community. Coupled with hardware and/or other AI applications like speech interactions, the possible topic areas become even wider. An open platform will be introduced with functionalities demonstration. Further, to foster AI research collaborations, the session will touch briefly on the RoboCup@Home Education initiative.

Kuala Lumpur (often abbreviated as KL) is Malaysia’s capital and the largest city in terms of population. The city proper, consisting of 244 sq km (94 sq mi), had an estimated population of 1.808 million in 2017. Greater KL, also known as the Klang Valley, is an urban agglomeration of 7.564 million. It is the fastest-growing metropolitan region in the country, in terms of population and economy.
In terms of air connectivity, Kuala Lumpur is served by KL International Airport (KLIA) at Sepang, Selangor, which is also the aviation hub of Malaysia and is located about 50 kilometers (31 mi) south of the city. KLIA connects the city with direct flights to destinations in six continents around the world and is the main hub for the national carrier, Malaysia Airlines, and low-cost carrier, AirAsia. KLIA can be reached using the KLIA Ekspres high-speed train service from KL Sentral which takes twenty-eight minutes while traveling by car via highway will take about an hour.
